How It All Started
GreenSeal.dev was created to close a persistent gap between sustainability research and real-world software engineering practice.
Its origins lie in academic research on energy-efficient software and artificial intelligence, initially focused on developing tools and techniques to reduce the energy footprint of software-intensive systems. As this work expanded to large-scale AI and cloud-based infrastructures within leading research environments, its practical relevance became increasingly clear.
Over time, this research expanded beyond isolated experiments into systematic studies of how software and AI systems consume energy in production, producing peer-reviewed methods for profiling, benchmarking, and improving efficiency — without compromising performance.
In parallel, these insights were translated into formal academic teaching, helping train hundreds of computer science and AI students to design systems that are both high-performing and resource-efficient. Through this combination of research, education, and industry collaboration, one pattern became consistently clear:
scientifically validated methods for improving software and AI efficiency exist, but they are rarely operationalized or recognized in everyday engineering practice.
Organizations could optimize systems, reduce costs, and lower energy consumption — yet lacked a credible, technical way to demonstrate and sustain those improvements over time.
GreenSeal.dev was founded to operationalize this body of knowledge: to bring together academic rigor, engineering practice, and continuous measurement into a practical framework for real systems.
From this foundation, the need for a clear, evidence-based efficiency label emerged naturally — one that reflects actual system behavior, relies on continuous measurement, and remains valid only while performance is maintained. This led to the creation of the label Green Software Practices™ (GSP™) as a formal way to recognize proven, sustained efficiency in software and AI systems.

GreenSeal.dev is co-founded and led by Luís Cruz, PhD in Computer Science, Assistant Professor, and internationally recognized researcher in Sustainable Software Engineering and Green AI.
His work spans academic research, engineering practice, and industry collaboration, with a focus on the measurement, optimization, and governance of energy-efficient software and AI systems. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and received multiple awards for academic excellence and research impact.
